JEE Main exam pattern (Paper 1, B.E./B.Tech)
| Subject | Section A (MCQ) | Section B (numerical) | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Mathematics | 20 | 5 | 100 |
| Total | 60 | 15 | 300 (75 questions, 3 hours) |
Marking: +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer, 0 if unattempted. Computer-based test conducted by NTA.
What changed in 2025: the optional choice in Section B was removed. All five numerical questions per subject are now compulsory, so older papers with 10 numerical options should be practised as five compulsory questions.
Always confirm the current pattern in the official information bulletin at jeemain.nta.nic.in.How to use JEE Main past papers well
- Start chapter-wise, not paper-wise. Use the chapter tag sheet to pull every past question on a chapter as soon as it is taught. Teachers can build a chapter test from real questions in minutes.
- Move to full papers under the real clock. From the second half of Class 12, solve complete shift papers in three hours, in one sitting.
- Analyse attempts, not just scores. Classify every question as fast-correct, slow-correct, fast-wrong or slow-wrong. Fast-wrong answers point to careless reading; slow-correct answers point to speed work.
- Keep an error log. Re-attempt every wrong question a week later. The log becomes the revision plan for the last eight weeks.
The attempt-quality analysis worksheet in the School Corner sets this up for a whole class.

What is the JEE Main exam pattern?
JEE Main Paper 1 has 75 questions: 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, split into 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-answer questions per subject. It carries 300 marks over 3 hours, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer.
Is there negative marking for numerical questions in JEE Main?
Under the pattern NTA has used since 2025, wrong answers in both sections carry −1. Always confirm in the current NTA information bulletin.
How many JEE Main previous year papers should a student solve?
Use every past question chapter-wise while the chapter is being taught, then solve at least the last three to five years of full shift papers under timed conditions in Class 12, followed by an error-log review.
Are the solutions official?
The answer keys are the official NTA keys. The worked solutions are written by AcademicX Campus master teachers, not scraped.
